When we sell our used gear we inspect the equipment thoroughly; take pictures + describe any damage we find in the product description; and rate the gear on a scale from 2 – 4.5 out of 5. We use this rating to determine our sale price and set expectations for customers. The system is as follows (out of 5):
5/5 – Never assigned for used gear, if it’s a 5, it’s brand new
4.5/5 – Product is in excellent condition. This means it is in close to brand new condition outside of being removed from the original packaging
4/5 – Product is in great condition. This means that the product shows some use but has light ordinary wear and tear. It likely hasn’t been repaired and doesn’t have any damage to it
3.5/5 – Product is in very good condition. This means that the product has been used, shows wear and tear, and might have repairs or require repairs. A product with this rating still has a lot of life left
3/5 – Product is in good condition. This means that the product has been used a good bit, shows wear and tear, and likely has repairs done or requires repairs. A product with this rating will be at a good price, will work, and will get you out on the water
2 – 2.5/5 – Product shows extreme use. This means that the product has been used, is beat up, is worn out, but is still useable. A product with this rating will be priced extremely low and is suited for someone on an extreme budget who wants to get out
1/5 – Never assigned for used gear, if it’s below a 2, it goes in the trash
